My New Yorker Cartoon Phase

Just as most teenage boys go through a Led Zeppelin phase, most young cartoonists go through a New Yorker cartoon phase. This was an early attempt at drawing in that trademark style. I've mostly recovered from my Led Zeppelin phase, but I still have visions of my drawings appearing in the same hallowed pages as a Roz Chast or Charles Barsotti cartoon - ideally in the middle of some impenetrable article on Mideast foreign policy.

  1. I like your comic. I went through a manga phase. Can't say I went through a New Yorker phase though. Though I did go through a comic drawing stage. Well maybe not a phase b/c I still do this.

everyone's crazy about Manga. I still don't understand how Japanese have blond hair cos they don't.

  3. What's complicated here is that the guy in the comic is plainly going through a Manga phase, while you the author of the comic are in the midst of a New Yorker cartoon phase.

    Wheels within wheels. Nice.

  6. As a writer learning to draw, I guess I'm in all phases or none of them. Just trying to find my style. I love your style--it has a professionally homegrown feel, if that makes sense. The Insecure Chess Set was priceless. Yours is the first blog I'm going to follow.

  7. Even I had a DBZ phase, I got pretty damn good at drawing some of the characters.

Fortunately for me, I never got into a real Manga phase, so to speak. I've always hated it and anime as well, except for a few exceptions (DBZ, Pokemon, etc.)

    Funny cartoon :]

  9. My niece is currently in a Manga phase. She keeps drawing pictures of family members with huge eyes and sticky-up hair like Yu-Gi-Oh.

  12. Haha, I'm still a teenaged girl in a Led Zeppelin and New Yorker phase! Never really got into manga, but I think my complete lack of manga interest got transferred to my siblings!

  13. Haven't heard about the New Yorker phase, but I've been through the manga phase too. (might not be completely over it either) My classmates always laughed about how all my characters had pointy chins and noses.
